The first Digital SAT(DSAT) will be administrated in Spring 2024.

SAT will soon be transitioning to a digital format. Instead of paper and pencil, students will now take the exam using a custom digital application that they must download prior to test day. By doing so, each student will be given a unique test form, making it virtually impossible to share answers and reducing the risk of compromising entire groups of scores. DSAT will be shorter than the current three-hour test. The exam will consist of two sections, Reading and Writing, and Math, separated by a break. As a result, the overall test-day experience will be shorter, as pre-administration activities such as downloading the app and completing the student questionnaire will take place in advance. Students will be able to take the DSAT on either a personal or school-issued device, such as a laptop or tablet. Those without a device can request to borrow one from College Board, and they will provide one for use on test day. This service is available to students taking the exam internationally, as well as those in the United States. Despite the change in format, scores will still be measured on a 1600 scale, and educators and students can continue to track growth across the suite over time. Furthermore, a score of 1050 on the digital SAT will correspond to a score of 1050 on the paper and pencil test.

To better accommodate digital delivery, the test content will also be adjusted. Questions will be more direct and focused on assessing the skills and knowledge needed for success in college and career. The Reading and Writing section will feature numerous shorter texts, each connected to a single question, rather than a few long passages with multiple questions. For the Math section, questions in context will be more concise and to the point than those currently seen on the paper and pencil test.

Despite the pandemic forcing most colleges to adopt test-optional admissions policies, the majority of students still want to take the SAT. In fact, 83% of students surveyed expressed a desire to submit test scores to colleges, regardless of whether or not they had taken the exam previously. The SAT plays a crucial role in the admissions process, allowing students to demonstrate their strengths beyond high school grades and confirming their academic potential to universities.

SHORTER, FASTER RESULT, LESS FRUSTRATING, AND EASIER(?)

The major changes are,

• Total test hours decrease by more than 30%, but the time for each question increases.
• English sections’ prompts are very shorter.
• A calculator in the DESMOS application is allowed for all Math questions.
• Depending on the performance of test-takers, the 2nd Stage questions vary.

For the current SAT, we have so many study materials, but for the new DSAT, currently, only a scruple of information and prep material is released officially. Even though the linear and the computer-adaptive-test versions of materials are released, there are many identical questions in both formats To experience the new DSAT, this fall PSAT will be the best choice for the students. Since I started tutoring SAT, College Board changed SAT format three times. The first SAT change was in 2005, with 2400 points, then again in 2015 back to 1600, and now, 2023-2024 tests. 2005 alteration had the biggest impact on my tutoring style. The difficulty of the English section dropped dramatically and the Math section became more like school-style tests. and in 2015, the addition of an essay section made many test takers panic, but later the optional essay section became the option nobody chooses now. Every alteration lowers the overall difficulty of SAT. The only thing never changed in SAT is SAT is the test shows individual students’ positions among other competitors.

새로운 디지털 SAT가 온다.

새로운 SAT는 이번 봄 해외 SAT부터 시작하여, 미국 본토에서는 2023년 가을 PSAT 그리고 2024 봄 SAT부터 디지털 형태의 테스트로 제공된다. 2023년 현재 10학년부터 직접적인 대상이다.

시험은 컴퓨터-어뎁티드-테스트로 제공된다. 쉽게 말하면 처음 문제들을 맞추면 점점 어려운 문제가 나오고, 틀리면 점점 쉬운 문제들을 주는 형태이다. SAT가 어렵고, 스트레스를 제공한다고 불평하는 학생들을 위한 조치이다. 앞에서 몇 문제 틀린거 같고, 후반부는 잘 풀었다면 시험 망한거다. 바로 다음 시험 신청해야 한다. 초반 문제들이 후반부 문제의 난이도를 결정하므로 시험이 점점 쉽게 느껴진다하면, 바로 다음 시험 신청이다. 조삼모사도 아니고 어이가 없다. 컴퓨터-어뎁티드-테스트의 실상을 알면 아마도 스트레스 더 받을거다. 미적분도 포함되지 않는 시험을 대입에 적용하는데, 거기다 바뀔 때마다 쉬워진다. 어메징 미국 대학입시 제도다. 시험 비중이 줄수록 과외활동(Extra-Curriculum) 비중의 늘어 훨씬 더 열심히 해야하는게 학생들에게 더 스트레스를 더 준다.
아무튼 이게 가장 중요한 포인트이다. 컴퓨터 시험이다.

시험 시간이 짧아진다. 문제 수도 적어지고, 한 문제당 푸는 시간은 늘어난다. 영어지문도 굉장히 짧아진다. 기존 지문길이에 비하면 “틱톡”처럼 짦아진다. 좋은 거처럼 보이지만 첫번째 변경점과 같이 함께면 부주위한 학생들에게는 헬게이트가 열릴 수도 있다.

영어에서는 공포의 스텐스 컴플리션 문제가 돌아온다. 그냥 빈칸에 적절한 단어 넣는문제인데 2005년 개정에서 사라졌다가 돌아온다. 이 문제 형태가 쉬운면 한 없이 쉽고, 어려운면 끝도 없이 어려울 수 있다. 보기에 있는 단어 전부 다 모르면 찍어야되는 문제 스타일이다. 모든 수학문제에 대하여 계산기 허용이다. 뭐 지금 현재 SAT에서는 네번째 섹션만 허용이다. 뭐 계산기가 필요하면 정도의 실력이면, 좋은 점수 기대하기는 지금도 힘들다. 큰 변수가 안 될것이다. 자세한 문제변화 예상은 수업시간에 당연히 현미경 레벨로 학생들에게 설명한다.

좋아진면도 있다. 시험 리포트가 빨라진다. 망하면 바로 다음 시험 신청할 수 있다. 어떤 학생들은 10월 첫주에 시험보고, 결과 나오는 2-3 주 동안 놀다가 점수 안 좋으면 다시 2 – 3주 공부해서 11월 첫주에 다시 보고, 또 이걸 반복해서 12월 시험까지 보곤하는데, 당연 10, 11, 12월 점수는 비슷비슷한다. 이렇게 공부해서 점수가 오르면 뭘 해도 성공한다. 이런 학생들에게는 조금이나마 빨리 정신차리게 해주는 좋은 변화다.

지금 현재 10학년들은 기존의 페이퍼 시험을 2023년 내에 끝내길 충고한다. 아니면 새로운 SAT의 피드백을 주시하다가 2024년 봄부터 SAT 준비해서 2024년 후반기에 보는 걸 추천한다. 2015년 이래 유지도 지금의 포멧의 SAT 자료는 너무 너무 많이 공개되었고, 내가 가진 양만 해도 어마어마하다. 하지만 지금 현재에 CollegeBoard가 제공한 공식 정보는 빈약해도 너무 빈약하다. 물론 적은 양으로도 어떤 문제들이 출제될 것인지는 전문가들에게는 예상이 되지만, 학생들이 직접 공개된 소스들로 공부하기에는 턱 없이 부족할 것이다.

튜터 경력중에 이번이 세번째 SAT 변경을 겪어봤지만, 이번에 점수 분포가 어떻게 바뀔지 예상이 약간 힘들다. 컴퓨터를 보면서 문제풀이하는게 신세대 학생들에게는 더욱 편리할지가 더 큰 변수이다. 하루 5시간 비디오 게임하는 집중력이라면 더 유리할지도 모르겠다. 항상 SAT나 ACT나 한국 수능이나 목적은 하나다. 학생들을 줄을 쭉 세우는 것이다. 그래서 쉽게 대학이 원하는 학생을 선택할 수 있는 환경을 제공하는 것이다. 모든 우리 아이들이 아무리 시험의 형태가 변화한다 할 지라도 공정한 자기평가를 받기를 바란다.
